"I draw inspiration from nature and I work with materials such as wood wrecks and animal skins..."
Born on March 5th 1987, SAVI Olivier Gbètoho Roland alias «Brakol» is a self-taught and versatile artist from Benin who excels at drawing, painting, sculpting and staging.
Since as early as 10 years old, the boy had reckoned with his calling for art. The long years at school have not eroded his dream of turning his art into a living, and unsurprisingly, after two years of university, he decided to take his destiny in his own hands.
From crafting bracelets and necklaces, he evolved to crafting shoes. Since he does not set a ceiling on his trade, the artist decided to raise the bar on his art as he ventured into the world of sculpture, drawing and painting.
Pushed by his followers and well decided to have his work acknowledged by a wider audience, he opened two exposition centres. Drawing his inspiration from nature, Brakol works unlikely materials such as woodwrecks, cauris (akuewekouin) which was formerly used as currency between businesses and their employees, and in the vodoun cults as well. The artist uses some animal skins as well as dried animal corpses.
His protean works tackle sensitive topics such as slavery, intimacy, sex, the profane and the sacred as well as the evolution of culture from our ancestors to nowadays.
Since a couple of years, the works of Brakol have started to cross borders and he is often sollicited a bit everywhere worldwide.
