Joël Thibaud

LATITUDES World Decor

I see today in most of my artworks an expression of the search for the Beau, or rather of its memory, an attempt to retain it, while all around me everything tended to desolation, economic, cultural and environmental. During their achievements, I experienced them as mystical refuges, prayers, appeals to reason, to wisdom...

My name is Joël Thibaud. Sixty-one, single, two children.

After various stays in medical and humanities colleges (English studies), I finally joined the School of Fine Arts in Grenoble where I graduated after 5 years of studies, giving shape to creative practices that have marked my childhood and youth.

I worked on the bodies, the links between flesh and mineral, the ephemeral (sculptures of ashes). Then I decided to leave France and since 1992 I live and work abroad.

My longest stay in the same foreign country lasted 20 years, spent in Madagascar. It was there that I began to work with soil, coal, and again, ashes, to eventually produce the following paintings which I called «Dry Gardens», in reference to the ancient Japanese gardens (literature, cinema and Japanese paintings have impacted me a lot).

I see today in most of these works an expression of the search for the Beau, or rather of its memory, an attempt to retain it, while all around me everything tended to desolation, economic, cultural and environmental. During their achievements, I experienced them as mystical refuges, prayers, appeals to reason, to wisdom.

Welcome to my world!
