GuanYin is an abbreviated form of Guanshiyin which means "The One Who Perceives the Sounds of the World". The one who observes, who captures the sounds, the prayers, the tears and more generally all the sufferings of the world.
GuanYin is thus the goddess of Compassion and Mercy.
In China, GuanYin is represented as a woman, unlike India. In the majority of the representations, you will find her dressed in a long white dress, standing on a lotus leaf or sitting in meditation.
