Moose Zooties Baby Hand-Felted Booties
Outrageously cute, this pair of felt baby booties are handmade in Kyrgyzstan by a women's cooperative. For infants ages 0-12 months.
Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous Central Asian country along the Silk Road, an ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean. A former Soviet Republic, it acquired its independance in 1991. The Tian Shan Mountains surround the old caravan route and dominate the country. In the south, the thousand-year-old town of Osh, once a stopover on the Silk Road, has a huge bazaar.

The Art of Felting:
The first step to creating these beautiful felt pieces begins with gathering some of the world’s finest sheep’s wool. Making felted wool is an ages-old, time-consuming process of bonding fabric with fiber. This is a physical job where the artisan’s scrub, rub, roll and rinse the wool again and again with soapy water.
Once the wool is bound into a sheet and the desired thickness is complete, the felt is laid out to dry. From there, the felt wool is cut and re-worked into many complex shapes and designs. The many sheets of wool might merge several colors to create patterns and layers. This takes a well-trained, talented artisan and is a true labor of love. The end results are colorful, one-of-a-kind textiles that are stunning to behold.
Meet the Artisans
Silk Road Bazaar is a wholesale representative of marginalized artist groups located in Kyrgyzstan and throughout Central Asia. They connect with artists who are far from the capitals, who have limited market access, or who do not possess modern marketable skills but have carried on traditional craft culture.
Following the proverb, ‘the best way to know a man is to walk a thousand miles in his shoes,’ Silk Road believes that to know who we are working with and to understand their lives, we ourselves need to live like and with them. They live amongst their artist groups for an extended period of time, and during that time they help them become self-sustainable by developing their designs, management techniques, quality control and computer skills.
All designs and collaborations are original works of Central Asian artists and Silk Road Bazaar.
